What is a pedometer?

A pedometer is a tool that counts the steps you take while you walk or run. The name comes from the Latin word for foot, pes, and the Greek word for measure, metron. A clip-on pedometer, a fitness watch, a phone app, and a page in your browser can all be a pedometer if they count steps.

People also call the same tool a step counter. In everyday use the two names mean the same thing. “Pedometer” is the older word. “Step counter” is what most people type into search.

How a pedometer counts steps

Most pedometers watch for a repeated up-and-down motion. A phone uses its accelerometer after you allow motion access. A clip-on unit uses a sensor at your hip. Accuracy depends on where you carry the device and how steady your pace is.

If a sensor is missing or blocked, you can still count steps by tapping them in. Those taps match exactly what you enter. Sensor counts are estimates: useful for a daily walking goal, not a lab measurement.

Pedometer and step counter online

A step counter online is a pedometer that runs in the browser. You do not install it from an app store. Open the page, walk with your phone, or add steps by hand. When it costs nothing, it is a free online step counter and an online pedometer you can use immediately.

A wearable is the better fit when you want counting all day with the screen off. A browser pedometer is the better fit when you want the count for this walk, kept on your device.
